I’ve been wearing out this song for the past few months in my personal times of worship. I’ve always thought about the lyrics in the sense of me welcoming the Holy Spirit into a place (my bedroom, a church service, into my car). It’s always been “Lord, come here, be present,” when in all reality He’s always been there, because God always shows up.
In worship today at Annual Conference we sang this song, and I really felt God asking me, “Do you really believe these lyrics for your personal life?”
“Holy Spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
Let us become more aware of Your presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness”
I couldn’t help but realize that sometimes, if we’re not careful, the only place the Holy Spirit is not present is in our own lives. We can welcome the Holy Spirit into places where He is already present all we want, but have we opened up the deep, hidden, and dark places of our own hearts and minds for the Holy Spirit to do His work?
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here, in this place.
More importantly, You are welcome here, in my heart.
